Music Therapist

The sound of well-being

Music therapists use sound, music, and rhythm to engage clients actively or passively to achieve therapeutic goals.

As part of the therapeutic arts program team, the music therapist is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of music therapy programs designed to meet the specific needs of their patients.

Compensation

$37.35 - $49.73 per hour

Duties

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate music therapy programs to meet specific patient needs
  • Provide treatment and support through music therapy sessions on an individual and group basis
  • Provide a safe, therapeutic, developmentally supportive, and culturally sensitive environment for patients and families
  • Communicate any relevant music therapy observations to the multidisciplinary team

Make a Difference

  • Engage and motivate clients to achieve therapeutic goals
  • Facilitate movement and overall physical rehabilitation
  • Address people’s physical, psychological, cognitive, and social needs, including emotional expression and support
  • Provide avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words
  • Heighten patients’ ability to cope with treatment

Work Collaboratively

  • Work directly with patients
  • Work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team including other rehabilitative specialists, healthcare professionals, and community organizations and partners
  • Work in a variety of settings, including hospitals and health facilities
