Addiction Counsellor

Breaking the chain

Addictions counsellors help people from diverse backgrounds recover from various addictions including drugs, alcohol, and gambling through information sessions, therapy groups, and various intervention strategies and treatment approaches to counsel patients through all stages of recovery.

Throughout this process, they continually review, assess, and document clients’ progress and follow-up post-treatment.

Compensation

$37.62 - $52.32 per hour

Registration

Duties

  • Inform the treatment plan by performing an initial assessment of client’s strengths, possible problems, extent of addictions, and potential for change
  • Provide information, lead therapy groups, and use appropriate, evidence-based intervention strategies and treatment approaches
  • Inform clients about available programs and services, and provide referrals when necessary
  • Review, assess, and document clients’ progress and follow up post-treatment

Make a Difference

  • Guide clients from addiction through all stages of recovery
  • Create customized client plans based on client history, research, and evidence-based treatment
  • Support recovery by connecting clients and families with community supports and resources
  • Increase awareness and reduce stigma towards people with addictions
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate public education, addiction prevention, and health promotion programs

Work Collaboratively

  • Work with patients and families
  • Collaborate with other counsellors and treatment specialists to exchange and present information to clients and the community
  • Collaborate with organizations, institutions, and communities on health and wellness programs in a variety of health and wellness facilities
